Description

This object is a series of reflection and dark nebula located 400 light years away in the constellation of Scorpius at a declination of -19 degrees.  It is nicknamed the Blue Horsehead nebula.  As is my standard convention, north is up here, so you will have to stand on your head to see the horsehead shape.

The Horsehead Nebula is one of my favorite deep sky objects. This horsehead is completely different but also very appealing to me.  It is much larger and more difficult to process than the original Horsehead because of its large scale and delicate nebulosity.

The nebula consists primarily of two reflection nebulae - IC 4592, the "eye" of the horse, and IC 4601, the "ear" of the horse. In addition, a wonderful dusty molecular cloud extends throughout the whole image.  I like the different shades of brown seen in this cloud.

My favorite parts of the image are the blue and white reflection nebula wisps which are seen in close proximity to the bright stars.  The wisps around IC 4601 are designated vdB 101, vdB 102 and vdB 103.

This image is a 4 panel RASA mosaic.  I was reminded again of the difficulty of processing RASA mosaics.  The high light gradients of the fast RASA optics do not calibrate out completely, especially at the image edges, making it a challenge to hide the seams of a mosaic.
